PHILADELPHIA, May 28, 2021 -Days after President Biden announced FEMA would reimburse Americans for funeral costs related to COVID, the effort was overwhelmed by grieving families dealing with bills that sometimes exceeded $9,000 (the maximum the fund will pay out). An 800 line — the only way to apply — often had hours-long waits to talk to a representative. Still, said founder Ed Michael Reggie, “It’s an amazing benefit, regardless of income of the family.”
