It\u2019s important to note that the risk of dementia increases with age. In fact, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/pdf\/factsheet_risk_factors_for_dementia.pdf\">nearly doubles every five years<\/a> after age 65. So, a loved one who didn\u2019t have memory issues just a short time ago might be struggling with them now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some individuals who are terminally ill can start to show signs of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/delirium-and-terminal-restlessness-1132475\">terminal restlessness and delirium<\/a>. Instead, do what you can to understand the root cause and find ways to help make them more comfortable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-memory-loss-and-end-of-life-wishes\"><strong>Memory Loss and End-of-Life Wishes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If a family member or loved one has been dealing with memory loss for a while and they\u2019re nearing the end of their life, it can complicate things when it comes to their last wishes. Obviously, you want what\u2019s best for the person you love, but you also want to honor what <em>they <\/em>want.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the proper documents haven\u2019t been drawn up, that can add more stress to everyone\u2019s lives \u2013&nbsp;especially after that person passes away. Dealing with grief and trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.funeralocity.com\/blog\/how-to-cope-with-the-loss-of-a-loved-one\/\">cope with a loss<\/a> while also handling legal documents or trying to work out a will isn\u2019t something anyone should have to deal with. Unfortunately, it happens far too often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When someone dies without a will in place, you\u2019ll likely have to follow <a href=\"https:\/\/wyomingllcattorney.com\/Blog\/What-Happens-if-Someone-Dies-Without-a-Will\">intestate succession laws<\/a>. That can be a slippery slope, and another family member or caregiver might challenge that they don\u2019t have the mental capacity to make changes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, you\u2019ll be able to work with your loved one or, at the very least, encourage them to create a living will when they\u2019re still of sound mind. Go through the simple steps with them as soon as possible, including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Choosing an executor<\/li><li>Going through property records<\/li><li>Deciding on beneficiaries<\/li><li>Appointing guardians (if necessary)<\/li><li>Putting the will on paper<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If they don\u2019t have one, talk with family members, their bank, and even consider consulting a lawyer about your best options.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-taking-care-of-yourself\"><strong>Taking Care of Yourself<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not easy being a caretaker, especially for a close family member. Prioritize your well-being so you can take better care of others. When you adopt the right mindset, it will be much easier to find time for yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider taking shifts with other family members, friends, or professional caregivers. Doing so will give you time to focus on yourself and will make it harder to feel overwhelmed by the situation. If you\u2019re in your \u201cgolden years\u201d, it can take an even greater toll on your mind and body to see an aging loved one struggling with their memory. The last thing you want is to put yourself at a greater risk of certain health conditions because of stress. Make sure you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicarefaq.com\/blog\/mental-wellness-golden-years\/\">maintaining your mental wellness<\/a> by:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Seeking out professional help<\/li><li>Fighting back against isolation<\/li><li>Staying active<\/li><li>Getting enough sleep<\/li><li>Eating a well-balanced diet<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking care of yourself and finding a healthy balance for your mental health can actually help to better prepare you for the loss of your loved one.
