The question of whether funeral expenses are tax-deductible will likely come up, and it makes sense to get a clear understanding of the tax rules before final payment is made.<\/p>\n

When To Deduct Funeral Expenses<\/span><\/h2>\n

According to the IRS, funeral and burial expenses are only deductible if paid out by the decedent\u2019s estate. Individuals cannot claim funeral and burial expenses on their individual income tax return.<\/p>\n

This means that if you pay the costs of your loved one\u2019s funeral out of your own pocket, you cannot deduct the expenses on your income tax return (IRS Form 1040). Per the IRS \u201cMiscellaneous Deductions\u201d guide<\/a> (Publication 529), \u201cBurial or funeral expenses, including the cost of a cemetery lot\u201d are listed as nondeductible expenses.<\/p>\n

In addition, funeral expenses cannot be deducted on the decedent’s final tax return.
